Learning

We have found that the most common method of learning to use a computer is a course, followed by work. This does not agree with results from surveys in the USA which found that self-teaching was the most common method for older people.

One survey even found that the percentage of self-taught users increases with age. These differences are likely to be due, at least in part, to cultural differences in the construction and marketing of courses, but may also be affected by differences in sampling methods.

The prominence of computer courses indicates the importance of designing them well.

They could also have a useful impact on product design as it is possible to get a picture of what older computer-literate people are likely to know and be familiar with by examining the content of these courses.

"Computers are too expensive".

"It is just too complicated, I cannot even type".

"Can people understand how to set it up?"

"The PC (personal computer) is too big. Where to store it?"

"What happens if people get stuck?"
